City of Asia Minor, northwest of Ephesus (area
7).
Colophon was one of the member cities of the Ionian Confederacy, the Paniones,
grouping cities founded in Asia Minor by Ionians fleeing the southern shores
of the gulf of Corinth west of Sicyon
in northern Peloponnese when the area was conquered
by Achæans (Herodotus' Histories,
I, 142-148).
Colophon was the birthplace of the philosopher Xenophanes.
